Description
While this amp is a bit of an odd bird, its story adds up rather auspiciously into a truly great-sounding amplifier. The cabinet dates to 1960 and features the rare "pink" brown tolex found on the earliest Brown-era Fenders. The chassis and most transformers however date to 1962, utilizing the later 6G4-A circuit. Stranger still, the upper back panel is from a later model with the dark brown tolex, used after the "pink" style was discontinued.
The Brown-era Fender Super has gradually been gaining popularity over the years, to the point it was recently reissued by Fender. Its output and format are similar to a Blackface Vibrolux, making it an ideal choice in terms of size and power. Another distinction about the particular amp is the output transformer has been swapped for an OEM 1970's Vibrolux transformer, which is an excellent match for this amp. Another great feature is the famed harmonic tremolo, which is on superb display here.
Internally, the power cord and electrolytic caps have been replaced, along with the screen grid and bias resistors. A handful of coupling capacitors have also been changed, as part of servicing the tremolo circuit. A couple of pots have been replaced, and grid stopper resistors were added to the power tubes for improved stability. Thankfully, all of the Blue Molded Ajax tone capacitors in the signal path remain, preserving the authentic early-'60s Fender sound. Please see the circuit photos for further details.
