This 1946 Martin D-28 is an incredible example of the post-war Herringbone guitar. Renowned for their power and cut, the mid 40s Herringbones are the ideal backup for Bluegrass, Country, and other acoustic music styles. This particular example was owned for approximately 32 years by James Alan Shelton of the Clinch Mountain Boys. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys were a monumental force in the world of traditional Bluegrass and this Martin D-28 shaped the sound of the band for roughly 20 years. James loved this guitar and over time had it modified to suit his tastes. The neck has been reshaped to a comfortable soft V shape and the braces were scalloped for a more responsive playing experience. It has had a few top and back cracks professionally repaired and was over sprayed to protect the repairs. Here in the CVG repair shop it has had a neck reset, compression refret, bridge reglue, and a new nut and saddle fitted. It is setup with medium action and is ready for the next chapter of its story.
