From direct midrange to clarity and presence in the top-end, the Martin D-18 is an instrument that continues to impress. This example is punchy with a strong supporting bass; making it an incredible guitar to support a band as it leaves room for for other instruments and takes up the perfect tonal range of an acoustic guitar. D-18's are one of the most iconic guitars of modern music and through repairs and decades of play, this guitar continues to perform. This example from 1945 has an ideal Adirondack top with tapered X-bracing. Based on the headstock shape, evidence of previous closed kluson tuners, wider heel, and replacement ebony board, we conclude this neck to be an early 60s Martin replacement. The finish is consistent with the neck and body, so it was likely refinished at this time (the checking style suggests an alcohol based nitrolacquer). Other repairs include a neck reset, refret, new ebony bridge, original bridge plate, and repaired impact cracks to the lower treble bout. With tapered bracing, this is a very ideal D-18 and plays like a dream!
