Deep within the history of Fender amps, there are a few legendary models whose configurations existed for only a short period of time. Among the likes of the 5E8 Tweed Twin and the 5E6 Bassman is the 5E4 Super, the only Tweed version to feature 6V6 tubes. This well-executed recipe results in an excellent-sounding amp that jumps out as if it came straight from your favorite albums. The Tweed covering was replaced with brown, interestingly enough, using era-correct brown tolex. Given the high level of craftsmanship, it’s possible this was done by Fender in the early '60s. Internally, it has a replaced power cord and electrolytic caps. All of the original Astron coupling caps have been swapped for later vintage equivalents, likely from the '70s. However, all of the original preamp resistors remain—please see the pictures for further details. The speakers are era-appropriate Jensen P10Rs, one from '57 and the other from 1960.

The transformers are an interesting mix of Tweed and Brown era equivalents that seem to retain the original vibe perfectly. The power transformer is a Triad 8160, the same type used in a ('58-'59) 5G9 Tremolux, making it a worthy equivalent. The output transformer is a Schumacher 125A7A from '62, originally used in a Brown Vibrolux or Blonde Tremolux, which also serves as a fitting vintage replacement. The choke transformer is the original Triad 4681.While the re-covering and transformer arrangement might rule it out as a collector’s piece, this rare player-grade gem has held up well and is a dream to play!
