This is one of the first-generation tweed-covered Pro Amps, featuring the ever-charming “TV Front” aesthetic, named for its resemblance to a 1950s television. These amps would typically be equipped with octal preamp tubes, but this particular example utilizes 9-pin socket adapters fitted with 12AX7s. The conversion works surprisingly well, delivering a great sound while also making use of tubes that are both quieter and far easier to source.
Despite showing heavy signs of previous wear, it presents its age with plenty of grace and character to match its tone. The original tube chart has long since disintegrated, and there are also a few extra holes drilled into the back panel.
Internally, the power cord and electrolytic caps have been replaced. The coupling caps have also been changed, as the original wax-paper types are prone to failure over time. Please see circuit photos for further details. Thankfully, all of the original Triad transformers remain intact, along with the original Jensen P15N speaker. These amps offer a charming, great-sounding alternative to the more expensive narrow-panel models from the late ’50s.
