Description
The Brown-era Fender Super has mostly flown under the radar until recently gaining more mainstream attention. Its output and format are similar to a Blackface Vibrolux, making it an ideal choice in terms of size and power. The biggest distinction is the famed harmonic tremolo, which is absolutely exquisite on this particular amp. An interesting factory quirk is the tube chart, which is stamped 6G4, though the circuit is actually the later 6G4-A revision.
Another neat addition to this amp is the original output transformer has been replaced with a Triad 1846 from an earlier Tweed Pro. Interestingly, this amp came factory-equipped with the same Triad 8087 power transformer found in the later 5E5 Pro models, making for a particularly unique combination of vintage Fender iron. To properly match the 8-ohm output impedance, the speakers have been swapped for a pair of 16-ohm Celestion G10 Greenbacks, which prove to be an excellent tonal match for this amp.
Internally, the power cord and electrolytic caps have been replaced, along with the screen grid and bias resistors. A handful of coupling capacitors have also been changed, as well as a small number of resistors with modern carbon composition equivalents. A couple of pots have been replaced, and grid stopper resistors were added to the power tubes for improved stability. Please see the circuit photos for further details.
