While vintage instruments can be measured and replicated, duplicating their tone and feel remains challenging due to design, craftsmanship, and the rarity of old-growth tropical hardwoods. Martin’s use of rare sinker mahogany—recovered from Belizean rivers after being submerged for a century—combined with non-torrified Adirondack spruce and meticulous craftsmanship, has resulted in guitars that rival the finest pre-war instruments. This 2020 D-18 example is like new with no significant wear. The only modification has been an added strap button on the heel.
