The “Tweed” era of Gibson only covers a short period between ’59 and ’61, and many believe these are some of the best amps they ever produced. They certainly have a distinct sound and live up to the Tweed name, comparable to Fender amps of the era but at a fraction of the price. This example shows moderate/heavy wear, including a few cigarette burns on the top, which can only be described as “character.” There’s a strange correlation with well-worn amps like this that somehow translates to the sound, and this one delivers pure, sublime vintage warmth. Frankly, it’s a genuine pleasure to play.

Internally, the power cord and electrolytic caps have been replaced, along with two coupling caps. Otherwise, the circuit remains original. The original Jensen P12P is holding up well and seems to have plenty of life left if properly cared for.

Players should note that this is a fairly primitive amp design and may lack some of the refinements they’re accustomed to. The 5879 pentode preamp tubes commonly exhibit microphonic tendencies, which should be taken into consideration depending on the context in which the amp is intended to be used.
