This 2009 Gibson F-5 Sam Bush Pilot Model represents an interesting chapter in Gibson mandolin production, built as part of the development process that would lead to the eventual Sam Bush signature model. Featuring a carved spruce top, figured maple back and sides, and a figured maple neck, it draws from the long-established F-5 formula while incorporating details tailored to the preferences of one of bluegrass music’s most influential modern mandolinists. The combination of carved tonewoods and ebony appointments gives the instrument a quick attack, strong projection, and plenty of tonal depth.
Unlike many production mandolins, pilot models offer a glimpse into the evolution of a design before it reaches its final form, making them particularly interesting pieces of Gibson history. This example features a 9.5" fingerboard radius and a 1.215" nut width, creating a playing surface that differs from many traditional F-5 specifications. A flamed maple armrest, Tone-Gard, and overtone suppressor have been added, complementing the instrument without altering its core character. Overall condition is excellent, and it includes the original hardshell case.
Includes OHSC.
