While several amps from 1967 share similar specs, the "Black Flag" reverse logo configuration is widely regarded as the definitive JTM50. This model represents a key transition in Marshall’s evolution, blending characteristics of both the JTM45 and the later JMP series. It retains the JTM45-style preamp but features a power section with EL34 tubes, delivering a robust 50 watts. A unique feature in this particular amp is the higher voltage 1202-133 power transformer, which gives it a powerful, punchy sound and ensures it fully lives up to its 50-watt rating.
Internally, the amp remains largely original, with only the electrolytic caps and pilot light having been replaced. Screen grid resistors were also added, which is essential for reliable power tube operation. One ohm resistors were installed on the power tube cathodes, for easy bias reading. The preamp is otherwise stick - The coupling caps are a mix of gray Radio Spares and the legendary Mustard caps, contributing to its rich tonal character. The logo looks to be an older replacement, as the original would have included gold accents. See pictures for further details. This amp perfectly embodies the classic AC/DC sound, aligning closely with the specs of the one used by Angus Young in the studio, as detailed in documented breakdowns online. A true piece of rock and roll history!
