The late '70s marked an exciting period for Marshall as they introduced the JMP model with a Master Volume. Little did they know that the 2204 and 2203 circuits would become the foundation for the next evolution in amplification—what we now call "high gain." Not long after, this same circuit was rebranded as the "JCM800," becoming a defining staple of early '80s rock tone.
Like the early JCM800 models, the original "Master Model" 2204 amps are highly sought after for their distinctive sound. Many players even prefer these over later versions, as they feature the lower-voltage Drake 1202-164 transformers, producing a smoother tone compared to the higher-voltage models that followed. Regardless, this particular amp delivers pure classic rock bliss—it’s that unmistakable tone you hear in your head when you think of a JCM800.
Internally, it has remained largely stock, with only the filter caps replaced and the bright cap clipped on the gain knob. Otherwise, the preamp is all original. Externally, the main logo and knobs have been replaced, though thankfully, these cosmetic changes have no effect on its incredible tone. If you're a purist who appreciates great tone, this amp might be just what you're looking for!
