Every so often, an amp comes through the door that makes you do a double—or even triple—take. This Tweed Deluxe is one of those rare pieces, in such pristine condition that it's fair to consider using the “M” word—mint—or at least as close to mint as a vintage amp can be. The most telling detail is the slight discoloration around the metal feet on the bottom, which appears to be the only place the Tweed has aged (as shown in the photos). For any serious collector, this is an exceptional opportunity to own a truly closet-kept Deluxe from the 1950s.
This amp also features the rare 5D3 circuit, which predates the 5E3 and represents the first Deluxe to use 9-pin preamp tubes instead of octals. The result is a distinctive tone—still retaining some of the midrange bark from the octal designs, but with added clarity and refinement thanks to the 12AX7 in the phase inverter.
Internally, the power cord and electrolytic caps have been replaced, and the original Astron coupling caps were swapped for modern equivalents. However, all of the original carbon comp resistors remain, and the amp is impressively quiet at idle. Whether you're looking for a top-tier player or a museum-worthy piece, this Tweed Deluxe fits the bill perfectly!
