Coming from the golden era of amplification, the Fender Bassman is the muscle car of their '60s lineup. Compared to earlier versions, the AB165 features 3 gain stages instead of 2, giving this later Blackface circuit an excellent crunch sound, bringing it closer to Marshall territory. The power transformer is the original Schumacher, and the output transformer has been swapped for a modern OEM Fender type (see specs). Additionally, the choke transformer has been replaced with a 1950s-era Philco.
Internally, this amp has a replaced power cord, electrolytic caps, and power resistors. On the preamp side, some plate resistors have been swapped for metal film, and a few ceramic caps have been replaced with mica. About half of the original resistors remain, and thankfully, all of the original "Blue Molded" Ajax coupling caps are still intact. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
Despite a few changes, this '66 Bassman is all business where it counts, and it sounds just as good as any all-original piece we've heard, if not better! Player grade has a character all it's own, and with a player is where this one belongs.
