At Carter Vintage, we love guitars that are old, original, and come with a story. This gorgeous 1938 Martin D-28 pretty much checks all of those boxes. Its original owner was a union organizer that represented the Ironworkers of America. In the vein of Woody Guthrie, he used his guitar for making music to bring people together. When he was briefly jailed for a union strike, his friends at the time grabbed the guitar and played it for him through the bars.
Its story now continues here at Carter Vintage. With rich Brazilian rosewood back and sides and an Adirondack spruce top, its powerful tone is exactly what you imagine a pre-war D-28 to sound like: Resonant bass with chiming highs. For closing in on its 90th birthday in a few years, this guitar remains in great condition. Several cracks have been professionally repaired on the top of the guitar, and most notably a minor repaired volute crack on the headstock. It's had a neck reset and the bridge plate has been reglued/repaired. It remains largely original, but has replacement bridge pins and a replacement nut, saddle, bridge, and end pin to keep it in playable condition.
Many consider '38 D-28's to be the gold standard of all flattops. One strum of this guitar and we think you'll see why. Includes non original hard shell case.
