From 1959 - 1964, Martin daringly experimented with electrifying their finely built acoustic guitars; D-28E, D-18E and 00-18E. The design premise was not too dissimilar to laminated top Gibsons J-160e, but with its own unique sound and construction methods to achieve stability for the mounted electronics. Unlike the the D-18E and D-28E, which were ladder braced to accept 2 Dearmond Pickups, the 00-18E hosted a single neck pickup and remained X-Braced, albeit with thicker bracing and a thicker bridge plate. Apart from the more robust top bracing and cutouts for the Dearmond and 2 potentiometers, this is a standard 00-18. At one time, this very guitar was played by Morgan Henderson of Fleet Foxes for the Helplessness Blues Tour of 2011-2012. Within the last year, this guitar had its previously non-functioning Dearmond pickup rewound by Revel Custom Pickups; it is now fully functional and reminiscent of the Kurt Cobain MTV unplugged sound. In addition to the repaired electronics, the guitar has had an extensive structural repair history: neck reset, reglued slipped neck block, 7 cracks repaired, finish touchup, spruce back strip patched, and replacement bone nut and saddle. All this being said, this is great playing rare model with a lot of aesthetic personality.
