Fender TL52-65SPL '52 Micawber 1980s, Butterscotch

This Fender TL52-65SPL “Micawber” dates to the 1980s Japanese production era, a period when Fender Japan was turning out some of the company’s most respected vintage-inspired instruments. Based on the heavily modified early-’50s Telecaster made famous through decades of touring and recording use with Keith Richards, the model captures the butterscotch finish, black guard, and worn-in utilitarian aesthetic. Even beyond the connection to the original instrument, these Japanese-made Telecasters developed a strong following for their build quality and attention to classic Fender details.

The ash body and vintage-style bridge deliver the direct attack and sharp upper-mid response expected from a good early-style Telecaster, while the substantial neck carve keeps the guitar feeling rooted in Fender’s ’50s designs. Unlike many modern recreations, these earlier Japanese examples have begun developing their own identity over time, standing apart from later signature and relic interpretations of the concept. The butterscotch finish has mellowed nicely with age, giving the guitar a naturally aged appearance that suits the stripped-down design well. It remains a particularly interesting piece from Fender Japan’s increasingly appreciated export-era production.
