This is the very first and Only Prototype Guitar made by Fender Custom Shop Master Builder John Cruz to pay tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan. This guitar was made in November 2003 for the 2004 Winter NAMM. Only 100 guitars were commissioned by the Vaughan Estate to be made for sale, but this prototype was saved by Cruz for his personal collection.
The guitar was built in the Fender Custom Shop of modern replica parts to match the original "Number One"'s specs: '63 body, '62 neck, '59 pickups, black pickguard, gold hardware, and Schaller tuners. It was further relic'd to match the wear on SRV's guitar (which was extensively examined and compared for and during the build). This is not just a show piece - the guitar is fantastic to play, and setup by Cruz for Stevie's custom set of 13 gauge strings, which feel great (at least for a little while, but these heavy strings are a workout on your fingers!). The heavy gauge combined with the meticulous build and setup give the guitar an attack you can't get on a regular strat.
It includes the custom Holmberg case, the original prototype strap, the 2 original certificates of Authenticity signed by John Cruz, and a signed letter of province chronicling how the guitar came to be.
