In the early '90s, Richard Hoover of Santa Cruz collaborated with vintage experts, including Doc Watson, to identify the most desirable qualities of the iconic Martin Pre-War D-18. Doc Watson owned the original prototype and stated that it was the dreadnought he had been searching for his entire life. What makes this model special is its advanced, scalloped X-bracing for powerful bass, complemented by the clear tone and definition of master-grade Rosewood. This particular example is in very good condition, showing moderate signs of wear. Most notably, some finish has worn away at the headstock, presumably from being left on a stand. It plays beautifully with low action, offering a rich, woody, balanced tone.
