In the early 1950s, the Martin D-28 was the arguably the most desirable flat-top a country singer could own. By the late 1950s, it was a luxury and a statement to have an oversized pickguard on one. This 1951 D-28 appears to have had a trip to the Martin factory in the late-1950s/early-1960s for work. As far as making an estimate on when this might have been, the pickguard material was used between 1957-1967, the single line Klusons were used until 1964, and the case is a 5-latch Lifton from between roughly 1958 and 1962 (before the handle changed). This one has a loud/warm sound that is sure to please any player. As part of the pickguard installation process, the top was refinished. The back and sides appear to have been lightly over-sprayed too. This one is an excellent player and looks incredible with all the cowboy character.
