Description
This amp was built during the metal-front era and features the long-style headshell, designed to fit snugly into the indentations on top of 4x12 cabinets. While it follows the classic 'Plexi' formula, it retains that signature crunchy tone with a slightly smoother response. It’s equipped with the Drake 1202-164 power transformer, which operates at a lower voltage than earlier models, resulting in a mellower sound with slightly reduced wattage. The amp shows minor signs of wear, with some piping on the top coming loose, but overall, it remains in very good condition. The serial number indicates a 1975 build, though the chassis signature points to 1976.
Internally, a few components have been replaced, including some resistors in the bias circuit and the bias feed resistors. Four preamp capacitors have been swapped, but high-quality Sozo caps were used, ensuring the vintage tone remains intact. Additionally, one cathode resistor has been replaced with a modern carbon film equivalent. See the circuit pictures for further details. Fortunately, none of these changes have negatively impacted the sound—this amp still delivers outstanding tone. Be sure to check out the '70s checkerboard 1960A slant cabinet we also have for sale, as it pairs perfectly with this 1976 head!
While fully functional, the buyer should note that this amp has all original electronics, including electrolytic caps that have long since expired. For prolonged or gigging use, servicing is recommended (cap job, etc.).
