This wildly rare 1940 Gibson SJ-100 features an Adirondack spruce top paired with mahogany back and sides and measures a full 17" across the lower bout. The mahogany neck is fitted with an ebony fingerboard, a 7.25" radius, and a comfortable C profile. Appointments include the early stairstep headstock, triple-bound top, and the distinctive mustache bridge with individual saddles. It retains Imperial tuners with replacement plastic Kluson tulip buttons and comes housed in a vintage hard shell case. It has undergone a full body refinish and the bridge plate is replaced.
The guitar has received a neck reset and refret, along with a bridge reglue, several brace regluings with one brace replaced, and a treble-side waist crack repair supported by a maple cleat. Additional maintenance includes reglued soundhole binding and crack repairs beneath the pickguard. A well-maintained example of Gibson’s early Super Jumbo design with the essential structural work already addressed.
Includes vintage hard shell case.
