We’re always happy when there’s a Gibson F-5 signed by Lloyd Loar in the shop, but when we have the opportunity to offer a previously un-circulated and undocumented Loar, our excitement level goes up another notch!

This beautiful F-5 was purchased in Manhattan in 1927 by the seller’s grandfather to celebrate the birth of his son (her father), and it has been resting in its original case for many years. When we received it a few months ago, it needed some attention due to being stored for so long. We then took it to Hugh Hansen, who carefully and painstakingly has brought this F-5 to its current condition.

From the February 18, 1924 batch, this F-5’s serial number is three digits away from that of  Lloyd Loar’s personal mandolin. This famed batch also includes mandolins belonging to John Reischman and Chris Thile, so it’s in great company. It plays wonderfully and, most importantly, it sounds fantastic. It’s already got great volume and chop, and as it’s played more and more, this lovely F-5 will continue to open up. This is a special mandolin, folks. Thanks for giving it your consideration.
