This 1960 Gibson ES-175D in Sunburst is a compelling piece both musically and historically, previously owned by Milton Hopkins—renowned Houston bluesman and longtime collaborator of B.B. King. It’s in great playing and working condition, with a lively acoustic resonance and that unmistakable electric voice thanks to its original set of PAF humbuckers. The bridge PAF once had its cover removed, but both pickups remain intact and full of character, offering the dynamic, warm response these early humbuckers are celebrated for.
During Milton’s time performing with B.B. King, a Varitone circuit was installed—likely a nod to King’s own preference for tonal flexibility. While the Varitone has since been removed, evidence of its presence remains, adding a layer of historical intrigue. A few other repairs and upgrades have been made over the years to keep the guitar stage-ready, but it remains largely original in both parts and spirit. A well-loved and well-preserved instrument with deep blues lineage and a sound to match. Includes the COA signed by Milton Hopkins, photos and the OHSC.
