Regarded as one of the greatest guitars of all time, the Martin D-28 is
the grandfather of dreadnoughts. Many feel that this is the point when
Martin reached the nexus of guitar building and perfecting their
instruments. This example from 1937 is a timestamp in history to show us
just how wonderful the craftsman were in the earlier years. Sonic
qualities are full of the best notes a player could hopeful. The guitar
is loud and articulate. A natural compression is present in the guitar
that makes the volume of every note stand out. Flatpicking really shines
on this guitar because the dynamics are so impressive. Hard bass hits
in combination with flourishing higher accents present the listener and
the player with a balanced experience. It takes time, attention and age
to reveal an instrument that performs and tells a story as impressively
as this one.The guitar is not in perfect original condition, but the
minor issues are something that we feel the next owner should make a
decision on how to proceed next. First of all, the entire guitar was
expertly refinished in nitrocellulose lacquer, likely at the Martin
factory in the late 1960s. The context clues being the color and
consistency of the lacquer and the late 1960s Martin hardshell case it
has been residing in for many years. There was a headstock break, which
might have spurred a theorized trip to the Martin factory. The crack has
remained stable and has recently received a little extra finish touch-up
due to lacquer chip out. While currently playable with higher action
and able to show off its sonic qualities, the guitar is due for another
neck reset, refret and bridge. The bridge plate was replaced at some
point, but is a thinner maple with a slightly larger footprint than the
original. The next owner has the rare opportunity to hear the glorious
sound of this holy grail 1937 Martin D-28 and decide how to proceed next
with it. Please ask staff for details.Comes with a 1960s Martin Hardshell
case.
