The 1484 Twin-Twelve is part of a group often referred to as “department store” amps, having been sold through Sears in the ’60s. These have a charm all their own and have gained popularity over the past couple of decades as a more affordable option with excellent tone. While the reverb is functional, many players tend to avoid it, as the design is a bit unconventional and not especially usable. The tremolo, on the other hand, is fantastic—lush and very musical.
It’s also worth noting that Channel 2 has a slightly higher noise floor, so Channel 1 is typically preferred for more sensitive applications. Quirks aside, these amps really shine with the volume cranked, delivering a great, organic tube-driven crunch.
Internally, the amp remains completely stock aside from a replaced power cord. A “4 Ohm speaker” label has been added to the back to indicate the cabinet impedance.
Despite being fully functional the buyer should note this amp has long expired electrolytic capacitors. While many amps are run this way for years without issue, anyone planning on prolonged or regular gigging use would be advised to have it serviced.
