Donal McGreevy is based in County Down, Northern Ireland, a region not only steeped in traditional music but also teaming with great luthiers. After studying under Sam Irwin, Donal is developing on that beautiful, distinctively Irish style of guitar making and fusing it with other modern approaches and techniques. His Model 2 is the smaller of his designs—an updated 00-size guitar with an uncommon 13-fret neck join and short 25" scale. Thoroughly versatile, its articulate and powerful voice works equally well with fingers or a flatpick. For this particular Model 2, Donal opted for figured myrtle from Oregon and torrefied Swiss moon spruce. As a support to moon spruce, myrtle offers up rather maple-like transparency, resulting in a smooth voice with strong fundamentals and clarity. It's also beautifully figured, and accented effectively by ebony binding and a little abalone around the rosette. With a nod to Grit Laskin, Donal added not just a beveled armrest, but beveled edges around the neck to facilitate reach beyond the 13th fret (they really do help!)Hiscox HSC included.
