The 1953 Kay K161, also known as the "Thin Twin," is a hollowbody electric guitar celebrated for its association with blues legend Jimmy Reed. Marketed under various brand names, including Old Kraftsman for Spiegel, this model features a single-cutaway body with a laminated maple top and back, and mahogany sides, contributing to its distinctive tone. The guitar is equipped with two unique "Thin Twin" blade-style single-coil pickups, which are mounted beneath a striking tortoiseshell pickguard. The old steel reinforced neck is constructed from mahogany and is topped with a bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard adorned with block inlays. There is relief in the neck that would be brought out with a compression re-fret if desired, but it doesn't affect the playability. Notably, the K161 boasts a 25 3/4" scale length and a chunky C-shaped neck profile, offering a substantial feel for players. The combination of these features results in a guitar that delivers a warm, rich tone with clear articulation, making it a favorite among blues musicians.
