This unique archtop was commissioned for the Fred Gretsch family sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s. Its design clearly takes inspiration from the iconic D’Angelico Excel, and it was most likely built by Vestax in Japan, the company responsible for Gretsch’s production during that era. As far as we know, no other example of this instrument exists. It’s unclear whether it was intended as a prototype for a future model or simply crafted as a special piece for the Gretsch family. The guitar features bold Art Deco styling—complete with a stairstep tailpiece, matching Deco pickguard, and a truss rod cover reminiscent of the Chrysler Building—hallmarks long associated with John D’Angelico’s aesthetic. This instrument was acquired directly from the Gretsch Family Archives. This guitar is in very good condition with minimal signs of play wear. There is a small area of binding separation, but it is stable and not a concern at this time.
