This 1994 Gibson Mastertone Earl Scruggs Standard represents one of Gibson's most successful modern-era bluegrass banjo models. Developed in collaboration with Earl Scruggs, the instrument was designed to capture many of the features found on the banjo he played throughout much of his career while remaining accessible to contemporary musicians. By the 1990s, the model had become a cornerstone of Gibson's banjo lineup and helped introduce a new generation to the Mastertone tradition.
Built with a curly maple neck and resonator, an ebony fingerboard, and a cast bronze flathead tone ring, the Earl Scruggs Standard combines many of the appointments that bluegrass players have sought for decades. The sunburst finish highlights the figured maple while complementing the hardware found throughout the instrument. This instrument stands as a reminder of the lasting impact Earl Scruggs had on both the banjo itself and the music that grew around it.
