Collings built the 01 A around the idea that a small body doesn't have to mean a small sound. The Adirondack top and scalloped bracing push more air than you'd expect out of a guitar this size, with a tight low end that doesn't get boomy and a top end that stays clear even when you're digging in with a pick. The satin finish is thinner than Collings' gloss options, which lets the top move a bit more freely and gives the guitar a broken-in look from day one rather than decades down the road. Mahogany back and sides keep the voice drier and more midrange-forward than a rosewood equivalent, which suits fingerpicking and blues playing where note separation matters more than long sustain. At this body size it's an easy guitar to sit down with for a while, and the tone holds up whether you're playing alone or filling in behind a vocal.
