This 1977 Martin M-38 was made as part of Martin's early efforts to build guitars that more closely resembled their prewar instruments. It features scalloped bracing and a small maple bridge plate, which contrasted the straight bracing and large rosewood bridge plates being employed on standard models of the time. The M-38 features Indian Rosewood back/sides, and is an early version of the quadruple- (0000) body size that many players have come to love, as it bridges the gap between smaller-bodied guitars and dreadnoughts. It is a sweet-sounding guitar with a tone all its own. It is responsive, deep, balanced, and a little more "present" than a dreadnought.
Repairs include a re-fret by Jack Dillen, a heat set of the neck/ fingerboard and a recut saddle slot (intonation) by Glaser Instruments in Nashville and the removal of a pickup. There is typical/expected lacquer checking and some buckle rash. The Schaller tuners are original, but it appears another set of tuners had been installed in the past. The pick guard is a Martin warranty replacement. Comes with OHC.
