Augmenting his self-guided journey into guitar-making with tutelage from the legendary Charles Fox at the American School of Lutherie, Joel Stehr is a luthier who crafts beautiful modern guitars in Spokane, WA. This 2020 Small Jumbo will stop you in your tracks both visually and tonally. Joel's SJ is a commanding 16" wide and 4-1/2" deep, but he's rendered it comfortable and easy-playing with bevels under the right arm, on the lap and against the ribs. Sinker redwood and black Brazilian rosewood, both harvested approximately 200 years ago, create a fabulously rich tone on this large-bodied guitar: Deep and complex, with just the right amount of warmth and sweetness in the trebles. A teardrop soundport allows the player to appreciate this guitar even more.
Highlighting the rich chocolatey browns and subtle reds of these tonewoods, Joel treated the redwood top to a sunburst and added reddish inlays to unite the color palette with pleasing cohesion. Maple purfling further allows these colors to pop. Work your way up to the headstock and a wolf-in-moon inlay (done by Tracy Cox) stares back at you, with stars scattering onto the fretboard. The condition and playability of this 2020 SJ is excellent, it comes with its original hardshell case and Joel's handwritten spec sheet.
