An exceptional blend of smaller body accessibility and tonal range of larger bodied guitars, the J-185 has an important place in history for its contribution to bringing the Jumbo sound into a smaller format that proved approachable for more playing and player styles. This example from 1954 comes only three years after its introduction. The perfect combination of beautiful Maple and Sitka Spruce form to create a perfectly aged guitar that has give and pleasant air to its sound. Arguably and ideal finger style guitar, the J-185 holds more than its own as a strummer or flatpicking guitar. The Jumbo body shape offers a shaped tone range not achieved by other Gibson acoustics and the smaller size generates a more palatable sound that excludes some overtones and bold lower end associated with J-200's. This guitar is in beautiful condition, showing its age well. Repairs include a headstock repair with some touchup, a bridge reglue, three top braces reglued, pickguard replaced, and a new nut and saddle. This guitar is in optimal playing condition and sounds wonderful.
