For diehard Joe Pass and Pat Metheny fans, there is one workhorse guitar that comes to mind: the Gibson ES-175 with a PAF humbucker. The warm tones of the PAF, especially in the neck position, creates an ideal Jazz sound. From a financial perspective, the sky has always been the limit for hand carved archtops laden with binding and inlay; which has meant that regular gigging in the Jazz clubs necessitated the question of wear and tear to such costly gear. The ES-175, at a cost of $275 in 1961, fit the bill and ended up an icon. It is also remains the most affordable PAF equipped guitar model on the market, which sub-sequentially makes examples like this, with its factory pickup to be rare (not having been scavenged). It's worth noting that the PAF humbucker has had its cover off at some point and was resoldered back in place; this could potentially indicate a rewind. The guitar sounds incredible plugged in and even benefits acoustically from a slightly thinner top from later iterations of the model.
