This 2020 Gibson Custom Shop ES-355 revisits one of Gibson’s most ornate semi-hollow designs in a striking Natural finish that puts the figured maple construction fully on display. Introduced in 1958 as the top-tier version of the ES line, the 355 combined the airy response of the ES-335 platform with upscale appointments and quickly found its way into the hands of a range of discerning players. The natural finish gives this example a different character than the more commonly seen ebony and cherry versions, lending the guitar a slightly more open and understated appearance.
Gold hardware, multi-ply binding, and block inlays retain the formal styling associated with the model, while Custombucker pickups keep the response rooted in late-’50s Gibson territory with warmth, clarity, and a soft upper-mid presence. The neck profile has a substantial late-’50s feel without becoming oversized, pairing nicely with the semi-hollow body’s resonance and quick attack. Condition remains excellent overall, with only mild patina developing on the pickup covers from normal handling and age.
