Although a relatively obscure brand, this Canadian builder made a big impact on rock music in the 70s. Garnet is known for some very innovative designs, which give their amps a unique sound. The Herzog is famous for being the lead guitar sound on the iconic 1970 song "American Woman" by The Guess Who. As you can hear in that track, this preamp has tons of gain on tap and features an interesting layout. The Herzog is built like a typical single-ended amp, complete with output transformer and all, making it essentially a modified Fender Champ. The key difference is that the 5-watt output power is shunted with a resistor and converted to a line-level signal that can be used to feed an amp or DI. These are very rare and a great piece of rock-and-roll history!
