The "S" in the model name denotes a special order, and the original owner of this guitar specified a 1 5/8" nut, slightly narrower than the 1 11/16" or 1 3/4" that was Martin's standard in 1939. Hard-playing country/artist Wilma Lee Cooper owned this guitar at one time, and she took it to the Sho-Bud company in Nashville for repairs and restoration. When she got it back, the top was too thin to support the string tension. The next owner sent it to renowned luthier T.J. Thompson, who  performed extensive repairs to bring it back to playing condition. Here's the rundown....

- The top was removed and a spruce "skin" was added to the underside to bring the top thickness back to standard. The original braces were reinstalled.

- The X brace was reinforced. Two holes in the top (now filled) indicate a previous bridge had been bolted down, and the bolts had damaged the X-brace.

- Bridge and bridgeplate were replaced.

- Numerous top cracks, rim cracks and back cracks were repaired.

- A cracked neck heel was repaired.

- Binding and fingerboard inlays were replaced.

- The guitar was completely refinished.

The result is a nicely restored, beautiful sounding example of the Holy Grail of acoustic guitars.
