Kinnaird Guitars are handcrafted by John Kinnaird in Swannanoa, NC. With a dual career (he's also a teacher!) that spans 40 years, the self-taught luthier evolved his own distinct style, taking familiar models and giving them a more modern, West Coast-inspired tone, feel, and aesthetic. He often utilizes more boutique tonewoods and incorporates imaginative inlays to make each one unique. Brother to fellow luthier Stephen Kinnaird, we were delighted to meet him at the 2023 Artisan Guitar Show where we got to chat and try his guitars in person. We're proud to feature them here on CVE!

John Kinnaird calls this the "West Coast OM", a perfect name given its gorgeous Tunnel 14 redwood top (reclaimed from an 1800s railway tunnel), paired here with Brazilian rosewood back and sides. It has a huge, dark, and more modern sound, with that shimmery clarity redwood is known for and a strong bass to round it out. John employs several innovative build techniques, including laminating the BRW sides with ziricote to preserve resonance and prevent cracking, graphite reinforcement inside, and a cantilevered neck to expand the continuous surface area of the top. A soundport and smooth arm bevel enhance the player's experience, while the lined pattern of the rosette and the matching fret markers accent the tonewoods. Ships in a hardshell case.

This guitar is currently located with the luthier in North Carolina, USA. Shipping times will vary by buyer location.

Seller Info

I’ve been building guitars for over 40 years. During this time I have avoided a formal education in guitar making which I now consider fortunate since I have been able to evolve, unhindered by the limitations of formal constraints, a style of construction and philosophy of tone which is unique and distinct. I have had mentors along the way. A visit to the shop of J. Rhyne in Atlanta in the early 70’s gave me the eye opening experience of seeing guitars being made by individual workers in a custom shop. Never before had I even considered that guitar making could be an art form that transcended what was produced in guitar factories. Of course I was hooked on the idea of making instruments and set out on what has been a life long endeavor.
