Kinnaird Guitars are handcrafted by John Kinnaird in Swannanoa, NC. With a dual career (he's also a teacher!) that spans 40 years, the self-taught luthier evolved his own distinct style, taking familiar models and giving them a more modern, West Coast-inspired tone, feel, and aesthetic. He often utilizes more boutique tonewoods and incorporates imaginative inlays to make each one unique. Brother to fellow luthier Stephen Kinnaird, we were delighted to meet him at the 2023 Artisan Guitar Show where we got to chat and try his guitars in person. We're proud to feature them here on CVE!

This eye-catching 13-fret slope dread from John Kinnaird feels in many ways more like a modern SJ or Grand Auditorium rather than a traditional SD. Featuring soft, rounded edges all around and an arm bevel, he's made the large body size more manageable and comfortable. A warm sunburst enhances both the bearclaw Sitka spruce top and the curly maple back and sides. This SD is proof that maple can be just as nuanced as other tonewoods, even a little warm and dark at times. But it still has a sweeter, cleaner sound compared to John's West Coast OM (also listed). It also has a cantilevered neck, something we see on many more modern guitars that can allow for more surface area vibration, and a soundport to enhance player experience. Ships in a hardshell case.

This guitar is currently located with the luthier in North Carolina, USA. Shipping times will vary by buyer location.

Seller Info

I’ve been building guitars for over 40 years. During this time I have avoided a formal education in guitar making which I now consider fortunate since I have been able to evolve, unhindered by the limitations of formal constraints, a style of construction and philosophy of tone which is unique and distinct. I have had mentors along the way. A visit to the shop of J. Rhyne in Atlanta in the early 70’s gave me the eye opening experience of seeing guitars being made by individual workers in a custom shop. Never before had I even considered that guitar making could be an art form that transcended what was produced in guitar factories. Of course I was hooked on the idea of making instruments and set out on what has been a life long endeavor.
