Coming right out of the thick of World War II, this 1943 D-28 is proof that even in those lean times, Martin was still making incredible instruments. By this point, they had switched to rear-shifted bracing, but they were still scalloping the braces, and the top is of course Adirondack, as the change to Sitka wouldn't happen until the following year. For players looking for powerful projection and bite, a rear-shifted Adi-topped dread like this one answers the call. With added sparkle and clarity in the high end and the sensitive response needed for hybrid or fingerpicking, this is a versatile guitar that need not be limited to the bluegrass world.
This 1943 D-28 is in fine condition for its age and is an excellent example, tonally, of Martin's early '40s instruments. Appraised in 1984 by George Gruhn as fully original, this instrument has since had normal and expected repairs (by Martin Guitar) including a neck reset, replaced nut, saddle, pins, and frets. The bridge (non-original, with drop-in saddle) has been reglued; the bridge plate and a pickguard crack have been repaired (cleated), and loose braces have been re-glued.
