Martin D-28 1948 - Marshall Chapman

Product Code: GF4922

$ 20,000.00

This 1948 D-28 "pours out the songs," according to singer/songwriter Marshall Chapman, who has owned it since the 1970s. The guitar appeared on the cover of a 1963 album by Walter Forbes called Folk Song Festival. Forbes was a Chattanooga native who made two folk-bluegrass albums for RCA (produced by Chet Atkins) and starred  in the 1973 Disney production The Nashville Coyote. The guitar found its way to Chapman, and in 1979, on her 30th birthday, she immortalized it in a new tune, "Guitar Song." She closed her 1982 album Take It on Home with "Guitar Song," and that cut was chosen for the Oxford American's 2019 Southern Music issue, which also featured an essay by Chapman about the guitar and the song.

This guitar's wonderful sound has been the key to its survival through some rough times that have left it with 2 top cracks and 3 back cracks (repaired), a bridgeplate over the original, a bolted-down bridge, part of the soundhole edge worn away, a heel crack (doweled), finish overspray and a replaced pickguard. It's in a '50s brown Gibson case and comes with a letter from Marshall.
