Sid Campbell's steady timing as a rhythm guitarist landed him on several recordings by legendary bluegrassers Don Reno and Red Smiley, including their classic country chart hit "Love Come Home." According to bluegrass lore, Reno coveted this guitar, but Sid would never sell it. Sid had his way with it, upgrading the fingerboard inlays and adding his initials "SC." At one point a "slip block" neckset was performed (or at least attempted), which resulted in a cracked neck block and kerfing damage. The bridge was once bolted down. A larger pickguard was added (the photo below shows a transitional pickguard). It was refinished and then other repairs were touched up. Luthier Ross Tiegen of Naples, FL, installed a new bridge and bridgeplate and repaired the neck block. Even without the connection to Sid, this is a wonderful-sounding, early example of the herringbone D-28, the standard-setter for dreadnought guitars.
