This stunning, one-of-a-kind custom guitar was made by Gibson, most likely for Charles M. Martelle, who was a partner in the Kalamazoo Musical Instrument Company, a local music store. A few other guitars labeled "Martelle Deluxe" have surfaced but none like this.
This guitar was built along the lines of Gibson's Jumbo, the short-lived but legendary dreadnought that debuted in 1934, easily identifiable by its deep body - at least 4" deep all the way around. But where the Jumbo has a mahogany body, the Martelle is maple. Gibson used maple on the L-Century model, small-body flattop that, like the Martelle, sported a celluloid fingerboard, but Gibson did not use maple on a large-body flat-top until a decade later, when a few maple J-45s and SJs appeared during World War II.
As you would expect, the sound of this guitar is unique - the maple body tempers the rich dreadnought tone with a clarity and balance that no mahogany or rosewood dreadnought can match.
