On the Venn diagram of traditional and contemporary guitars, this one sits right in the middle, marrying the responsiveness and complexity of a modern fingerstyle guitar with the vintage-inspired feel, clarity, and appointments that Collings does so well. Their 000 design sits perfectly between an OM and 00—it has the wider 15" lower bout and standard scale length of on OM, but the longer upper bout of the 12-fret body. The result is a fingerpicker's dream in any tonewood combo.

This special 2007 0002's German spruce top ensures plenty of dynamic range, with a sweetness that combined with Madagascar rosewood results in rich, rounded lows and mids and singing trebles. This guitar also sports the sought-after varnish finish (a $2k upgrade), and fitting appointments like the sunburst, Dalmatian pickguard, and abalone rosette help it standout visually. It does have two repaired (now stable) cracks in the top, and there are numerous dings, mostly across the lower bout front and back, and some light buckle rash on the back. Nothing to take away from the excellent playability and tone.
