Unicorn 76 1976
Rolfe Gerhardt, originally based in San Antonio, made an estimated 149 legendary mandolins under the Unicorn brand in the 1970s. For the Bicentennial year of 1976, he planned to make 15 mandolins with patriotic star inlays and red-tinged abalone pearl borders (between two red lines of purling). He only finished 11 before the year ended, and this is one of those 11 U-76 models. In the overall Unicorn series, this is No. 23, and it's listed on David Finche's Unicorn registry. It is a work of art - tonally as well as visually.
